The Technical and Visual Arts department aim to bring creativity and flair into students learning experience at Acton High School. The department comprises of several subjects taught by a range of specialist teachers. At KS3 students spend half a term in each area rotating through each subject within the TVA department. Students complete 6 to 7 week projects at KS3 in Resistant Materials, Graphics, Art, Food and Textiles. Students are encouraged to be creative, use questioning to develop their thinking and improve their ability to design within all areas of TVA. At KS4 students have the opportunity to take one year GCSE courses in all of these subjects with the inclusion of Photography (maximum of 2 TVA subjects per year). The GCSE allows students to explore new materials and methods of working within a brief that they will have selected for their final project. All of the GCSE courses offered by the TVA department comprise of coursework and a final exam. Students are expected to provide a final product which they have created and a portfolio of evidence showing research, design and making that has taken place throughout the year.

Independent Learning

Independent Learning is an integral part of all students’ development and is set regularly within the TVA department. At KS3a 1 hour task is set each week. These tasks vary from research, investigation and design tasks. Homework is to be completed either in booklets or on Fronter.

At KS4 independent learning is vital to the success of our students. Students are expected to work on their GCSE portfolios in their own time, as for most subjects these portfolios make up a large percentage of their final GCSE grade.
